Surrealism;
Surreal photography is about creating a world or image which goes beyond the physical world as we know it. It's creating something that is highly unlikely or impossible to happen.
The photos above represents what surrealism photography is about, all of them have a lot of thought and editing behind them. It's all about exploring and being creative.
Research:
Shawn Van Daele
Shawn Daele is a great photographer,he was born in Wallaceburg, Canada and studied Drawing & Painting and Graphic Design. Shawn then started taking photo-manipulated self portraits.
This is my favourite photograph, I like the way the person seems as though they are in the jar, it looks realistic. The jar isn't in the centre of the picture and the lighting is focused onto the jar, you can see the light being reflected on the glass.
Martin Stranka
Martin Stranka is a self-taught photographer. He has over over 50 major photography awards, such as the professional photographer of the year and international photography award.
TAKE ONE:
Plan:
My idea for this shoot has came from a photo which was taken by Shawn Daele, I will try to recreate this but with a twist so it won't be exactly the same.
For this I am going to use a clear glass jar, I want to make it seem as though someone is in a jar and on a shelve along with other jars.
For this I am going to use a clear glass jar, I want to make it seem as though someone is in a jar and on a shelve along with other jars.
Photoshop:
Worst:
This photo isn't neatly cropped it looks messy and the lightning isn't as great. This isn't the image I was aiming for as my end result, next time I will be careful on Photoshop.
Best:
This is a great photo, my Photoshop skills were successful as this is what I was aiming for. The lighting is perfect as it's reflecting off the glass jar. The image is also cropped neatly which is good. The exposure is varied which is great, some parts are light and some aren't.
My Jar shoot idea came from this photo by Shawn Daele, I've used his idea of putting someone in a jar but with my own twist. As you can see the photo on the left, which was taken by Shawn, is very dark but mine is bright, however both photos still have light reflecting of the glass. His photo is sad and gloomy but mine creates humour. This shows how I can take a simple idea and make it completely my own.
TAKE TWO:
Plan:
For this shoot I am going to use a rock and Photoshop, I'm going to create a face on the rock.
Photoshop:
Worst:
Best:
This is the best photo because of the editing done on it, I played around with the opacity and brightness to create this image.
TAKE THREE:
Plan:
I am planning to draw a man fishing and add it to a photo I took for landscape photography. I will use Photoshop to edit it.
Photoshop:
Worst:
This is the worst photo because it doesn't have effect like the one below.
Best:
This photo is the best because it's clear and the exposure of everything is perfect. It's what I wanted to achieve.
Take four:
Plan:
The objective for this shoot is magic, I will use Harry Potter as a theme.
Photoshop:
Worst:
This image is under exposed the only thing you can see is the candles. There's no magic in the photo, this isn't what I was aiming for. There hasn't been any work on Photoshop for this photo.
Best:
This is a good photograph, it's what I wanted to achieve, I think the lighting and exposure is perfect. It demonstrates magic. My Photoshop skills have developed, this shoot has allowed me to explore my editing skills, I was able to alter the brightness of the photo.
This is also a good photo, the aim of this image was to make someone appear from a book, I have done this however it might not be understood as easily as the image above as it doesn't look realistic. Next time instead of using the internet for photos I will take them myself.
Take Five:
Plan:
I am attempting to create a devil vs Angel scenario, I will use photoshop to do this.
Photoshop:
Worst:
This isn't good, more work was needed on Photoshop and the crop tool wasn't used properly, It looks messy. The theme/scenario cannot been seen.
Best:
This is one of the best shoots as it's allowed me to develop my Photoshop skills. This was the most creative shoot. There are different colours, the scenario is clear and everything is in focus. I think I got the message across in this shoot as this is exactly what I wanted to achieve.
Evaluation:
I have really enjoyed Weird and Wonderful, it has gave me the opportunity to use my imagination and be creative. It has allowed me to improve my Photoshop and editing skills. It was more about the creativity than the techniques. I think this was one of the best projects of unit 1 as it was extremely fun and interesting.
